I have been surprised to discover how much faster running YaST2's online update function at the command line is compared to using the YaST2 GUI in SuSE 8.1 Linux Professional. As I am sure most folks know, the (basic, without options) syntax is: ultra:/home/anthony # yast2 online_update .auto.get ultra:/home/anthony # yast2 online_update .auto.install My question is, I also run SuSE 7.3 Linux Professional at home (despite many attempts, I have been unable to install 8.1 on my home machine which is an elderly Compaq Prosignia manufactured in 1999) and, although the above syntax is documented also in the SuSE 7.3 Administration (I think, although it could be Configuration) manual, it doesn't actually work as running the "yast2 online_update .auto.get" command as root in SuSE 7.3 results in an ncurses based interactive user interface appearing which requires manual intervention (it's very like the YaST2 Online Update GUI but drawn using ncurses rather than in an X session in fact). Is there a way of overriding this in 7.3 (perhaps with a command line switch or option?) and forcing YaST2 to perform the online update procedure automatically? Or is the suggestion that the command line method will work automatically without human intervention in 7.3 an errata in the manual? Many thanks. -- Anthony Edwards anthony.edwards@uk.easynet.net
