Does the same phenomenon occur if you change the USB port?
Along the same lines, I'm wondering if there is a power issue where the USB port is not supplying enough power. Are these external enclosures? Almost all 2.5" external disks I've used are either USB 3.0 where enough power is supplied by the port, or if they are USB 2.0, they have a Y connector where they draw power from 2 different ports at the same time. Larger enclosures usually need external DC supply.
