You can always revert back to kde3 Kmail by installing kdepim3 - it works well. It can be installed from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_12.3/
I think a lot of people here are using Thunderbird. I myself migrated to TB from Kmail2, and I'm very happy with its performance.
