Hi, i would like to operate a second computer so i can use more hard disks and CPU power. Is this easy to do with 1 monitor and keyboard ? I am already using a simple router. What is the best setup you would recommend ? A KVM switch usually is OK if the machines are close together. Otherwise have something cheap and cheerful on one and drive everything else via X on your main machine.
Usually is not too much of a problem... Thanks jdd, gandalf and ka1ifq for your replies. Buying a second monitor would be great, but i don't find a big one with 24bit and affordable.
http://en.opensuse.org/Remote_Access_to_SUSE explains that the best way to run GUI tasks on a second machine, using one monitor and no KVM, would be to establish a network and then use NX by Nomachine.com. Is FreeNX which he doesn't mention better ? VNC apparently is * - Difficult to install and use (... lets not dwell.)
That's never been a problem that I've noticed
* - Slow
Kind of, yes
* - UnSecure
Definitely... but if both machines are in the house, behind a firewall, it's not something I would worry about.
* - Can not adjust to different client monitor sizes easily
Not an issue for what the OP describes.
* - Bad server and client management (... lets not dwell.)
Again, I think that accusation is overblown.
:-)
Kind regards Philippe
