If it's a bug in the base libraries then it's possible that ALL KDE packages would need to be recompiled against the new libs.

What do you mean? SuSE keeps very much up to date - KDE 3.4 was available for 9.2 (at least) mere days after it was released!
I know that six months between releases isn't really that long, but things like beagle make me wonder: if it goes "gold" in a month, will SuSE repackage it and make it available in the supplementary updates? I'm really hoping so.
