I grabbed the .run installer script and ran through it. On my LEAP 42.3 system, it had to install a lot of dependencies and then uninstalled the two partial(?) hplip RPMs and then ... a test page came out! So, yeah, this was drop-dead easy. Thanks again!
but hplip comes already with the distribution.
