But am I correct in tending to believe that logrotate only works on systemd controlled stuff?
logrotate when enabled runs on logs. if those logs are identified in the configuration "/etc/logrotate.d/fetchmail", logrotate will act on them. why would you believe otherwise? you need to think about what you have and what you want and how they work. *read* the man files.

Why? Initially I did not suspect that even remotely possible.. After continued failure to get the fetchmail log to rotate, despite following, or believing so, the docs and suggestions, I looked for other reasons.
