I thought that I'd just add my personal experience: We used to have a mail system based on Outlook/Exchange Server/NT3.51, talking to the mail stores at our ISP. :-( As you may guess, this was *very* unreliable. As a backup, I used a 486DX4/100 PC with SuSE Linux 6.x (don't remember the exact version), with Netscape as the mail client.
