It is adviced to execute /sbin/SuSEconfig indeed after every update.

A good moment to switch to another rpm version is with a new release (to my opinion). Well actually a x.0 release, but SuSE just passed this milestone with 8.0. Perhaps to sync with UnitedLinux partners Conectiva and Turbolinux, SuSE could make the switch when the UnitedLinux version is released...

I applied a patch to the APT source code to get it compiled. Still wundering how much runtime impact this has.
