The installation of the kernel packages brought with it a warning message (repeated multiple times for each package):

I am a bit gun shy at this point to reboot the new system, being afraid the machine will not find the kernel or other important stuff at boot time and turn into a brick.
I've seen that scariness happen more than once, including yesterday on a Socket A machine using a PATA disk running 11.2 & stock 2.6.31-desktop, though I don't remember whether I've seen it before on the same machine or on others. I don't worry about bad new initrds because I have zypp configured to permit multiple kernel versions and just boot a previous if something goes wrong in a new one.
