Lenz, One final question...I hope I can return the favor in some way for all your help. My /boot partition resides above cylinder 1024. I want change my /boot partition from /dev/hde20 to /dev/hde8. I copied the contents of /dev/hde20 to /dev/hde8 (after mounting /dev/hde8 as /mnt/temp). I then setup my boot manager to boot from partition /dev/hde8. I then rebooted the PC and chose to boot from this new entry in my boot manager, but the computer did nothing. I am trying to eliminate the need for a SuSE disk to boot SuSE Linux. I think I need to somehow install LILO to the first sector of partition /dev/hde8 after copying the files from hde20 to hde8. Is this correct? How do I do this? BTW - That solution, that you suggested in your last E-mail about using /mnt instead of /, worked wonderfully. I was able to install SuSE Linux 6.3 successfully! If successful, we will prove that a person can use YAST2 and still install to non-adjacent partitions. I have high hopes! Thank you for all your help, Matt

To mount the root filesystem and add the device files as you suggest, should I: 1) press "CTRL-ALT-F2" to switch to another console 1) type "mount -t ext2 /dev/hde22 /"
No, use another mount point like "/mnt" on the installation RAM disk. Mounting it on "/" is not advisable.
2) use mknod to create the missing device files within the /dev directory 3) type "umount /"
Use the correct mount point here, e.g. "umount /mnt".
4) press "CTRL-ALT-F7" to switch back to YAST2 and boot the new SuSE system
I'm checking because I want to do it correct the first time.
This should be the correct workaround. Good luck! Let me know, how it worked out.
