As I remember, those old 386SX boxes typically had perhaps only 4 MB of RAM (or even less). Unless you can find say 16 MB or better 32 MB,
The maximum ram address space for a 386SX is 16megs
you will be better off dumping the 386SX. Once the system starts swapping to disk, the PC will run very slowly. In any case, it will not be fast!
It will not be fast, true -- but it will still be quite usable (I use my 386sx16 with 10megs of ram as an Xterminal.) He should definitely not spend any money upgrading it though :-)
