OpenSuse 11.1 ntpd seems to have a problem resolving the name "us.pool.ntp.org" when running as a daemon, but not from the command line.
I'm seeing these errors in the log: host name not found: us.pool.ntp.org couldn't resolve `us.pool.ntp.org', giving up on it
Yet when I query that name with the "host" command it looks fine: host us.pool.ntp.org us.pool.ntp.org has address 217.160.254.116 us.pool.ntp.org has address 209.20.66.253 us.pool.ntp.org has address 66.36.239.104 us.pool.ntp.org has address 66.96.99.10 us.pool.ntp.org has address 199.199.208.25
and when I run "ntpd -d -q" it syncs fine from one of the address of us.pool.ntp.org: newpeer: 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 vers 4 poll 6 10 flags 0x201 0x1 ttl 0 key 00000000 local_clock: time 0 offset 0.000000 freq -10.467 state 1 report_event: system event 'event_restart' (0x01) status 'sync_alarm, sync_unspec, 1 event, event_unspec' (0xc010) refclock_transmit: at 1 127.127.1.0 refclock_receive: at 1 127.127.1.0 peer LOCAL(0) event 'event_reach' (0x84) status 'unreach, conf, 1 event, event_reach' (0x8014) refclock_sample: n 1 offset 0.000000 disp 0.010000 jitter 0.000002 clock_filter: n 1 off 0.000000 del 0.000000 dsp 7.937501 jit 0.000002, age 0 auth_agekeys: at 1 keys 1 expired 0 timer: refresh ts 0 timer: interface update transmit: at 2 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 receive: at 2 192.168.3.105<-217.160.254.116 mode 4 code 1 auth 0 peer 217.160.254.116 event 'event_reach' (0x84) status 'unreach, conf, 1 event, event_reach' (0x8014) clock_filter: n 1 off 1.255019 del 0.097514 dsp 7.937502 jit 0.000002, age 0 transmit: at 4 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 receive: at 4 192.168.3.105<-217.160.254.116 mode 4 code 1 auth 0 clock_filter: n 2 off 1.249385 del 0.095019 dsp 3.937511 jit 0.005634, age 0 transmit: at 6 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 receive: at 6 192.168.3.105<-217.160.254.116 mode 4 code 1 auth 0 clock_filter: n 3 off 1.251640 del 0.090293 dsp 1.937519 jit 0.002872, age 0 transmit: at 8 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 receive: at 8 192.168.3.105<-217.160.254.116 mode 4 code 1 auth 0 clock_filter: n 4 off 1.251754 del 0.089975 dsp 0.937525 jit 0.002330, age 0 transmit: at 10 192.168.3.105->217.160.254.116 mode 3 receive: at 10 192.168.3.105<-217.160.254.116 mode 4 code 1 auth 0 clock_filter: n 5 off 1.251924 del 0.090059 dsp 0.437528 jit 0.002008, age 0 report_event: system event 'event_peer/strat_chg' (0x04) status 'sync_alarm, sync_ntp, 2 events, event_restart' (0xc621) addto_syslog: synchronized to 217.160.254.116, stratum 2
Mitch, What does your /etc/ntp.conf look like? Despite the claims the rcntp addserver is supposed to add servers to your system, I continue to just add them to the /etc/ntp.conf file and it works fine: ## ## Outside source of synchronized time ## ## server xx.xx.xx.xx # IP address of server server ntppub.tamu.edu server 0.us.pool.ntp.org server 1.us.pool.ntp.org server 2.us.pool.ntp.org server 3.us.pool.ntp.org -- David C.
