I do not believe that any linux drivers have been developed for the Radeon 9000 yet. The Radeon 8500 supports only 2D and the 7500 supports both 2D/3D. No idea when the linux drivers for the 9000 will be out or 3D drivers will be available the 8500.
If any of this is wrong, sure someone will correct me.
ATi has planed to develop 1 driver for all it's video card since last year. It's like the nVidia driver. ATi driver will be called catalyst driver. On windows, ATi Radeon 9xxx already use the catalyst driver 1.0. And the 8xxx and 7xxx will soon be supported under Catalyst. The same goes for Linux. To speed up driver development the ATi Linux driver will be updated to catalyst driver. If this driver released all 7xxx, 8xxx, 9xxx video card in Linux can run 3D. With Catalyst driver, any future ATi VGA card released ATi can provide driver that compatible with linux in a very short time.
