Can I do this?? /dev/hdc /media/cdrom /dev/hdb /media/cdrecorder /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom /dev/scd0 /media/cdrecorder In other words, point 2 different mounts to one file? If so, what entries would I make? If not, why? I right mouse on my desktop (KDE 2.2.2) and select New - CD-ROM. I then select /dev/hdc and /media/cdrecorer. I then click ok and double click on it but it can't find /dev/hdc. When I do a cdrecord -scanbus, it shows the drive being scd0. So I tried /dev/scd0 /media/cdrecorder and I get an error like "can't find /" Tom -----Original Message----- From: Gordon Pritchard [mailto:gordon.pritchard@techbc.ca] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 8:58 AM To: tom@neuro-logic.com Cc: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] mounting cd-rom cd-rw On Tue, 2002-02-19 at 03:08, Joe & Sesil Morris (NTM) wrote:

Should be /dev/sr1 and /dev/sr0 instead of hdc and hdb.
Hmmm.... From my fstab, I have: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
LS -AL CDROM CDRECORDER
lrwxrwxrwx 1 tom root 9 Feb 18 21:33 cdrecorder -> /dev/scd0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 tom root 9 Feb 18 21:33 cdrom -> /dev/scd1
These should be links to /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1.
gordonp@oilslick:/dev > ls -al cdrom cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 19 11:14 cdrecorder -> /dev/scd1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Feb 17 15:33 cdrom -> /dev/scd0 I also have sr0 and sr1 in my /dev, but I don't know why my system is pointing at scd0/1 instead. However, it works. Tom - you have conflicting help here; maybe try both ways.
Can I make multiple mounts or multiple pointing???
It can only have one mount point, and one dev, but you can have multiple links pointing to the dev.
Yup! In actual fact, my cdrom is a DVD-player. So, a more-comprehensive view of my fstab is: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 And the corresponding /dev links are: gordonp@oilslick:/dev > ls -al cdrom cdrecorder dvd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 19 11:14 cdrecorder -> /dev/scd1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Feb 17 15:33 cdrom -> /dev/scd0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 19 11:14 dvd -> /dev/scd0 The references to dvd and cdrom are identical, it's just that some programs *need* to refer to one or the other (or else they barf).
So I made the scsi-ide connection and now they both appear as a scsi device and work with my burning programs, but now they won't mount from my desktop, even when I change the path (if the path is right.../dev/hdb /media/cdrecorder).
I happen to use Ximian/Gnome/Sawfish, and can right-click on the desktop to bring up a menu, allowing me to mount any of these. I can also mount them from a console (both situations as a 'user'). For burning, I've only ever done data-CD's, often starting with 'mkisofs' at the command-line, then KonCD under X-windows. DVD-movies using Xine. So, you should be able to get what you want! Here's another thought - let's remove the GUI/desktop configuration aspect. With your fstab modified to *NOT* refer to /dev/hdc, but rather /dev/cdrom, open a console, stick a CD in your cdrom, and try manually mounting it, as a user: mount /dev/cdrom If that doesn't work, try again as 'root', then tackle the permissions issue. If neither works, consider fstab alterations, or /dev symlink variations. HTH!
