I wonder why my SuSE Linux 8.1 becomes very slow sometimes. It becomes slow if my harddisk suddenly being busy because of an unknown process. I guess because fsck but I am not sure. You system shouldn't slow down that much. It could be that dma is disabled. That means a high system load when your hard drive is heavily accessed. Check it with as su with: hdparm /dev/hdx or /dev/sdx where x is the letter of your hard drive.
