I seem to have a failing STB HD, a "refurb" Samsung HD155UI relabeled as Seagate ST1500DL004 Barracuda Green, bought 11 months ago. Log from latest
there are usually test programms from the disk maker. The drawback is that often they only run on windows :-(, but at least once this utility could revive a failing disk (I never understood why, but after usage the disk was as good as new).
using these apps are mandatory to have them accept a hardware return
Usually my HDs are old enough to use whatever diag is on the last ultimatebootcd I burned, usually easier to locate than those on HD maker web sites.

My focus had to be on file recovery. WRT to warranty it doesn't matter. It had a typical refurb warranty, 90 days. I've never seen any refurb HD with more than 6 months warranty. It failed the Seatools 1.09 short test @10% complete in 6 seconds even though it says SMART is enabled and was not tripped. Long doesn't look like it will be done for quite some time. It's only done 6% in 15 minutes... -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg.
