preventing programs from creating thumbnails

Hello all: Is there a way to prevent programs (kuickshock, who knows what else) from creating thumbnails at different places? I just discovered that my .thumbnails folder contains ~ 30000 thumbnails (png) occupying over 600 megabytes. This is horrible.
