OK I screwed up in an attempt to "optimize" a self-compiled kernel using Suse 8.2 pro.
Simply reinstall the kernel from the dvd/cd. Probably, you should also reinstall patches downloaded by YOU. Next time, when you compile the kernel yourself, edit the makefile and put something on the "EXTRAVERSION" line, like your initials ("-BG", without quotes). This change means that your compiled modules will go to "/lib/modules/2.4.20-BG", leaving the original suse modules intact. Then, go to grub or lilo configuration, and make sure you have an entry to boot the vmlinuz.shipped kernel. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
