Here's your problem, for some reason you've upgraded pango to the version for gtk2-2.4.x, but not upgraded gtk2 to 2.4.x

Either downgrade pango to the version included in 'base' (or the CD), or upgrade gtk2 -- I decided to downgrade pango because I didn't find an rpm for gtk2-2.4.x. Now The Gimp and synaptic work again. This is good.
