Personally I do feel the operating system should be allowed to control the (master) boot loader.
That's the root of the MBR anarchy incepted by multiboot as most know it. Every installer that finds the MBR non-empty should very explicitly ask permission before doing anything, control granted, rather than control usurped. When generic MBR code, can be preserved in conjunction with a FOSS bootloader installed elsewhere to provide a choice of both old and new, it should be the preferred or initial offering rather than obliteration of the existing. http://old-en.opensuse.org/Bugs/grub#How_does_a_PC_boot_.2F_How_can_I_set_up... -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
