Hay un procedimiento publicado para instalar la cadena de paquetes de 32 bits para el escanner en la distro de 64 bits: +++ Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 11:26:22 +0100 (CET) From: Johannes Meixner <> To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] 64-bit 10.3 & Iscan Hello, On Mar 12 19:10 Fred A. If you are unfortunate enough to have bought an Epson scanner that doesn't have a 64-bit Epson Linux driver, only 32-bit, then you either have to install the 32-bit release of openSUSE OR, if careful, you can use 64-bit 10.3.
For some background information have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=337816 Summary: Make sure the scanning frontend is 32-bit so that the whole scanning software stack becomes 32-bit. On 64-bit there is the package sane-backends-32bit.rpm. Having this installed (together with all what it requires e.g. glibc-32bit.rpm and many other base libraries in 32-bit) should be sufficient to have all needed libraries in 32-bit. It should not cause problems to have additionally the 64-bit libraries (i.e. sane-backends.rpm) installed, they are just not used by 32-bit software. I think the main problem is to exchange the by default installed 64-bit frontends xsane.rpm and/or sane-frontends.rpm explicitely with 32-bit versions (i.e. get them from the right media). RPM Drivers at: http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html
Why don't you use our RPMs of their software? I keep them as up-to-date as possible (i.e. I check in the current version a short time before package version freeze). I provide their proprietary stuff in the packages iscan, iscan-proprietary-drivers, and iscan-firmware. Additionally I provide their free software in the package iscan-free so that it works natively on 64-bit systems for those scanners which don't need their proprietary binary-only i386-only modules. For details read the RPM package infos. Regarding scanner recommendation: I cannot recommend a particular model but I would avoid any scanner which requires firmware upload and/or which requires a proprietary binary-only i386-only module from iscan-proprietary-drivers. I think the simplest way to check which scanner is supported to which extent by the packages which we provide in a particular product, run the YaST scanner setup, read the comments in its model list, and "fake" to set up the model which you intend to buy. In case of known possible problems, the YaST scanner setup shows a popup message.
