I've got exactly the same problem as you had with the md5 logon. Have you got a solution ? All the info I got before was: "go to yast in the security section" ..., but there is no entry for md5. Linux just ignores a pw-length longer than 8. Even if I set Max_Pass_lenght=20 !
Yep, I got it working. I set PASS_MAX_LEN in /etc/login.defs to 127, then I checked out /usr/share/doc/packages/pam/modules and read a bit there about how to enable it. That led me to add the md5 option to these files (note the md5 argument for these): /etc/pam.d/login: password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 use_cracklib /etc/pam.d/login: password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok /etc/pam.d/passwd: password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 use_cracklib /etc/pam.d/passwd: password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok /etc/pam.d/sshd: password required pam_pwcheck.so md5 /etc/pam.d/sshd: password required pam_unix.so md5 use_first_pass use_authtok Then I had to just change the password for the accounts I wanted to update (passwd [user]) and it updated their passwords to use passwords greater than 8. I also wrote an adduser script that uses md5 passwords for the next time I add users.
