[opensuse-translation] desktop files, episode 47.217
Hi, I need to talk ;) I noticed today a problem, that I thought is specific to my current work, but I figured it's a general problem we have since ages and never noticed: We have msgctx "Name(konsolehere.desktop)" msgid "Open Terminal Here" msgstr "" Looks harmless. Problem here: kde3's german has a different translation than kde4's german. And it's not just one example, it's almost everywhere. And I have no idea how to solve the problem - I need to write _one_ translation. Splitting into even more pot files is no solution either as then somewhen later we have to pick - and all we have is "konsolehere.desktop". Anyone a brilliant idea? At least the good news: by now I can sort by package name, so I can define which package should win. But will this be good enough? I'm tempted to ignore the issue: if the desktop filename is the same, then it means that you have two different versions of the same program in two prefixes. In this case, the most recent translation wins (ie, KDE4). Or are the KDE3 and KDE4 translations completely different? (I guess it will mainly be an issue for KDE3 vs KDE4?) The problem is: I don't know what's the most recent transltion - I'll need a way to figure it out, but that's technically possible I guess.
(I guess it will mainly be an issue for KDE3 vs KDE4?)
At least the KDE3 vs. KDE4 cases pollute the diff, so I can't tell if there are others. Ah, I would have expected the KDE4 translations to be more recent. Hrm. The po files for desktop files are never released, KDE simply releases new sources with updated desktop files. And the timestamp of the desktop file says little about when the german translation was last touched ;( But I think it's safe to assume that KDE4 is more recent than KDE3 and I try to optimize for that.
