[opensuse-support] printing problems
Installed (I think) b/w printer HP m201 and color printer Epson WP4530 some weeks ago. First the b/w laserjet, a day or two later, the Epson. When I first installed the laserjet b/w printer, I tested it and it printed. After installing the Epson, which never printed, got a problem with the laserjet. At first, I was getting a failure message that seemed to indicate that there was an open file in the print queue. Now I get nothing-- no message, and no print. Found a command that was supposed to clear the laserjet, but nothing happened, and I forget what the command was anyway. When I try to print from the Epson, I get a message, "There are conflicts in duplex settings. Do you want to fix them?" I check the YES box, but it doesn't help. I can print to either printer, and scan from the Epson, from another computer running an older system--PCLOS--from about 5 years ago, so the printers and the network are OK. System is TW, installed 26 June 2020 and updated most recently within the last week. (I can ping both printers from this machine so the network's not the problem.) Note: this is a new computer and a new version of the OS and bears no relation to any communications from early in 2020 or prior. That old computer went toes up in May. I welcome any suggestions as to how to proceed from this point. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

The Epson shold work flawless: https://openprinting.org/printer/Epson/Epson-WP-4530 The HP is not listed under that name [...]

A connection is a good start at least. I would go to localhost:631 in the browser, click on a printer -> Settings and run through the settings. Make sure that the right connection is chosen, some printers do not work just on the IP address (e.g. lpd://192.168.1.103/binary_p1 in my case). Looking at the Printers page in the System Settings box, it says Epson_WP4530 Idle - 'Rendering completed' and LaserJer (sic) _M201 Paused - 'Unable to add document'
I have no idea how to "unpause" it, or what caused it to pause in the first place, altho if it's related to the Epson printer, I would not be surprised, since I noticed the problem after installing the Epson and trying to print to that. Now, in spite of the misspelling, it DID print, a couple of times, but you can see why I think there may be an open file in the print queue. I found the misspelling and corrected it-- Don't know if that matters. I did try to troubleshoot the HP via some stuff in the system, but it had no effect. For the Epson, XSane cannot find the scanner.
The Epson shold work flawless: https://openprinting.org/printer/Epson/Epson-WP-4530

Corrected the misspelling in /etc/cups/ didn't make any difference, and there's another one somewhere. Found a window titled "Laserjer_M201 - B/W printer (13 jobs)--Print Queue" Note misspelling again. This has a list of jobs that didn't print Under Status is the list, where it always says Stopped. Under a heading Active jobs, each line says Filter failed. While mucking around in this batch of stuff, I did get the laserjet to light up, but not print. I suppose this is all somewhat incoherent, but I admit that I don't know what I'm doing! I appreciate all assistance here. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

This is the problem: the filter that processes the file fails. Is it always the same file? What kind of? You may want to read the hints in https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1172447#c1 which was dealing with a filter problem as well - in this case it was an issue in poppler. The bugzilla seems to apply to Ghostscript (or Postscript) from pdf files. The test files I wish to print are just a sentence or two written in Kate to test the printer, except for one large file that I tried to print when I first ran the installation. That file was probably written in a word processor--I don't remember now. Thank you for your interest. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Let me caution you to not just start whacking at this problem without knowing what you are doing. E.g., you certainly don't want to be mucking about with the CUPS configuration; IME it is very unlikely that this is your problem. In particular, do not change anything that was done by the printer installation. It is much more likely that there was a job interrupted during spooling, which has either hung up the queue on your computer or possibly the printer is waiting for a print file to complete. So first things first. Take the KDE System Settings/Printers out of the equation; it is just an interface to the CUPS server anyway (but with less functionality). Instead, open a browser to http://localhost:631/printers/. For the laserjet in the list, note the Status, it will probably say "Stopped". Select the laserjet. Select Show All Jobs and make sure all have been deleted from the queue. You will then need to restart the printer. (Sometimes this is a problem with tools like KDE provides; it requires root or the option is not offered.) The printer (queue) once restarted should show a Status of "Idle". Now under Maintenance do Print Test Page. If the page prints, all should be clear. Leave the browser open here. Open Kwrite, key a couple lines of some characters, and try to print to the laserjet. Result? While you are at it, also install HPLIP. HP provides excellent Linux support. (Actually, HP's Device Manager is the best tool to use to install an HP printer on linux.) It provides all the controls as the CUPS interface, but more (in particular, print driver options). In Printer Control you can manage the jobs and stop/start the printer queue. You should also familiarize yourself with the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS). Just enter the printer's LAN IP address to bring it up. The EWS provides a wealth of in-depth info about the printer and many firmware settings that are beyond the print driver. (But again, don't be changing anything unless you know what you are doing.) Also, if you have Windows on this machine make sure you have cleared any jobs pending there, and that you can print from there. It's a good idea to install the HP Device Toolbox for Windows, too. --dg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Result? I restarted the printer and sent it one file file from Kate--a one-liner. Got the same output as before. I told it to "reprint job" and the same output. But the printer lighted up, it was being accessed, the file was just not sent, apparently.

Printing to the LaserJet from Windows works perfectly. When I tried printing to the Epson in Windows, it thought I was trying to send a FAX. Did not try to troubleshoot this at this time. --doug

I don't know what you mean by the "printer listings embedded in the OS"; what YaST suggested when you installed? According to HP, the printer is fully supported: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/in.... Here is the m201 driver included in the hplip package: /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip-hpps/hp-laserjet_pro_m201_m202-ps.ppd.gz
Remember that the Laser did print originally, so the ppd file is correct.
Not necessarily. For a reason I cannot explain, there is sometimes more than one driver associated. And sometimes there is a ghostscript driver. In any event, I have seen YaST offer more than one. I suggest you: 1. Power off the Epson. 1. Uninstall the Laserjet with YaST. 2. Reboot. 3. Reinstall the Laserjet using the hplip HP Device Manager. (It's on the KDE menu.) 4. Print a test page from the HP Device Manager page (and not anything else). Hi doug, if its paused it will not print. inside cups (browser (firefox) and then localhost:631) go to "printer" click at the printer you have problems then click at "service" ( maybe another word for service, i translate it.) and there you should be able to start (or stop) the printer. there is also a line to test the printer. - if you see only "stop" stop it and start it again, i have had a situation where this have helped. i have not exactly understood what you do, it seems for me, that you have some proprietary printer software installed. maybe you should delete all proprietary software and try to install the printer with cups. this here is a network printer brother: lpd://192.168.0.13/binary_p1 this here is a OLD!! qms minolta connectet over network: socket://192.168.0.11:35/?version=1.1 if you have OLD printers, it could necessary to add the "version" string you see here. somewhere in past 2 years cups has changed. but your error: 'Unable to add document' sounds more than your printing que will not be reached. you should google this with something like "cups Unable to add document" try to connect your printer to a usb (or parallelport - if you still have one) then you avoid the problems of network. if its running then try network. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
