I find that there are many packages in the OpenSuSE repositories that are unusably old, so I must compile from source to get current versions.
Sure, of course. I did that in the past as well, but I did not use source repos.

Which 'extra' repositories? Other than Packman, the only extras I have are Fonts and Wine. Even if I use the OpenSuSE Download webpage, most stuff is back-leveled. Leslie --
