The originating gmail address is only used as a 'host' for my openSUSE
OK, so Google allows you to send mail on behalf of arbitrary person as
long as you authenticate as Google user. That makes sense as it means
each mail is traceable so no anonymous spam is possible.
But is still does not answer original question - how to configure alias
in gmail settings and use it in web interface. It seems most people
confuse the question "how to configure secondary e-mail in gmail" with
"how to use gmail smtp as mail relay".
