Usually, news groups are not to ask how to do something, unless you
discover a problem.
This is to bring-up problems and solutions.
Please people, stop to send so many bullshit mails.

Usually, thats exactly what most news groups are for, although I agree that the purpose of this group is somewhat different and unfortunatly the amount of "noise" in this group is growing.

I think it would be more constructive not to abuse people, but to point them to more appropriate linux discussion groups, as there are groups for almost every level of competence/experience. Bye Kai

the things is that many of us are newbies. I sit here at my computer, with
about 5 linux books in front of me. I am learning very fast, have managed to
put-up a small network, configure everything to make my computer an internet
server, but there are things that aren't easily understood with the books!
Isn't a resource like this for people to learn, and to help each other?
or would it be better to pay $$ for tech support ala M$.

Hi Stephen, I completly understand your point but you must also understand the points of the people responded to your post. Every new group has its focus on a topic. As with the mailinglist you posted and got flams back the focus is very sharp on security issues. Whereof your posting was of generell topic. (Even if it is vise to switch to sendmail 8.9.3 in regards to security and buildin spam features). It has absoluty nothing to do if one gets paid for something. The only point of the flams is that one should place its request where they can be answered or more correct where the people are willing to help newbies in such situations. If you yeel in the forest you can not assume to get the right answers. Here some place to look for informations: http://www.sendmail.org/ If you have any further questiuons you may send me a request directly. If so, send me your base system information with version (i.e. SuSE 6.1) and I try to answer your questions Lembke Computer Consulting Dietmar Lembke PS: I'm not going to charge you for that. There are some resources (news groups/mailing lists) for stuff like that, but as I understand it this list (suse-security) is for security announcements only. In hind sight my submission about the 'adduser' cmd was out of place, and a bad thing to do, sorry, won't happen gain. I'm on a number of other mailing lists, some are quite newbie tolerant, some see it as a game to see how much they can rip it out of newbies and end up downloading and mirroring their web sites to take the piss out of them. It's just a matter of trying lots of different lists 'til you get a good list of a level you want. Some questions I post I wouldn't post to some lists, without first donning an asbestos suit, others are fine, lurk and see what the list is like. cog -- ,------------------------------, ,====================| S H U N A N T I O N L I N E |===================, | David M. Mailing lists are a great way to obtain help when you can't solve a problem on your own, don't understand the documentation, or can't find a good resource of information. Yes, you can often learn a great deal from reading lists such as these. However, it is considered proper netiquette not to use such lists as a free "classroom". If you get an RTFM don't take it personally. Mario
