which Anti-Virus Program could you recommend ??
Hi list, i want to scan a Samba-File Server for Viruses. At this time i am testing F-Secure AV for Linux an it runs fine, but a Server licence costs 300 Euro. (Workstation 90 Euro - but i think i need Server-Licence ?) For me its important to have good update - support to always get the newest signatures (ok, what is newest) It would be nice if you could tell me your choises and experiences, thx a lot - Andreas (box: Suse 7.3 / Samba / mostly Win9x clients)
Hi, I am pretty happy with Kaspersky labs products. HTH mike

I'm running AntiVir MailGate from H+BEDV. If it's for private use and
non-commercial use, you can get it for free, with one year update
included in the license key. Take a look at
www.hbedv.com.

I'm also happy with kaspersky.
Their programming support when you have problems installing it, is not
great for Linux, but the internet helps here, and regarding virus-detection
they seem to be pretty fast and respond immediatedly to possible
new virii you send them.

I'm using Inoculate IT (for linux) on my linuxbox. It is
supported from amavis, qmail-scanner and QMVC from Erwin Hoffmann.
You can get InoculateIT for free from the ftp-server from ca
under the bbs-directory.
InoculateIT is a part of Arcserve, one of the leading backup softwares.

Hi,
At this time i am testing F-Secure AV for Linux an it
I'm using Inoculate IT (for linux) on my linuxbox. It is
ok, in some ways answerd to the wrong part. Of course you can take Inoculate IT for sambachecking. Ino... itselve is a normal virusscanner that can be taken from special av-scanningprogramms that scans viruses for using squid, samba, ... Regards, Ruprecht

Hi Andreas among all the possible solutions, maybe this would be an easy and cheap one, which may find your interest, if you simply want to keep the smb volume clean. Get something like Norton AV 2002 or similar, install it on one 98-client, keep there the virus information actual and scan your samba sharing with the build in scheduler program periodically. Just some general hints (and sorry for late response, even ill-minded hackers need some vacation from time to time ;)) For scanning a Samba file server I'd recommend to use a product which is able to do on-access scanning (a scheduled scan has always a "time gab" between putting an infected file on share and running the cron job). So, either use a generic solution (a kernel module) for on-access scanning like Kaspersky AntiVirus (kavmonitor), H+BEDV AntiVir (AvGuard/Dazuko) or Trend Server Protect/Linux (IIRC CAI InoculateIT offers such a feature, too). Or use a Samba VFS module which provides virus scanning facilities, such as samba-vscan (www.openantivirus.org [1]) HTH Note: www.av-test.org is currently performing a comparison review of Linux/Unix anti-virus products AFAIK. best regards, Rainer Link (SuSE Labs) [1] You're welcome to visit our talk LinuxTag 2002 in Karlsruhe, Germany, see http://www.linuxtag.org/2002/deutsch/showitem.php3?item=387&tid=abcfhegkefk&lang=de) -- Rainer Link | SuSE Linux AG - The Linux Experts link@suse.de | Developer of A Mail Virus Scanner (www.amavis.org) www.suse.de | Founder OpenAntiVirus Project (www.openantivirus.org)
