Hello I've asked this question on the SuSE English list but didn't get an answer. I've been able to find a generic firewall script which will probably work with my own PC. Do I just type that into a terminal window or do I just put it into a file somewhere ? If I do need to put it into a certain part of the system where do I put it ? Thanks Richard Sheffield UK

Hmmm. A firewall is the most delicate system I can think of. Don't forget, it is the heart and brain of your security model. A generic something is very unlikely to do the job you are referring to. Without _much_ more further information this question can't be answered. Trying to help you nevertheless, the answer is: it depends. If your script needs to be started at every system start: yes. If it changes some system aspect permanently: no, until you want to change it.

Let me be honest with you: if you ran across a script and don't know how to use it, don't even think about building a firewall. How could you expect to get anything more but a warm feeling about it? Maybe start with reading books on computer security. This answer is in no way meant to discourage you, to joke on you, or hurt your feelings in any way. And maybe I just completely misunderstood you. It's just very difficult to answer a question that IMHO mixes the most extreme ends of knowledge (basic vs. advanded). At least that was my impression with your question. I would either use or change "/sbin/init.d/firewall" or "/etc/ppp/ip-up". Do you have SuSE 6.2? Have a look at series "sec". There you'll find "fct" a "Firewall Configuration Tool" and "gfcc" a graphical frontend for ipchains firewall rules. Oh.. I was afraid that someone might say that. Is there any way we can get it over to England. I've got a publisher who could translate it. My own German just about get up to "danke" or "ein beer bitter" I was thinking that when the 2.4 kernel comes along it might be an idea to try to publish a small booklet in England which will help the crippled to walk ? Our linux demo days were so much of a success that I've got people crawling all over me who want to do something with linux.
