hi .. does this happen on one tar file only?
i guess that the file somehow got damaged - perhaps the system crashed or your
file-system has a problem (which file system do you have, btw?), maybe the
file was partly overwritten accidently, maybe your system was compromised (i
don't think the last two would be true for your particular problem). try to
look into the man-files content with an editor of your choice (i prefer vi).
honestly, i don't think your hard-disk is failing - usually it makes funny
noises and if data gets corrupted linux would notice that it can no longer
read from a sector. believe me, hard-disk failures usually don't come silently
over night. moreover the file would most likely contain totally random
characters (below ascii code 32 and above ascii code 130) which is not the
case with your file. however, if you haven't already done so, this is in any
case a good time to back up your data.
