Second, the latest freeswan.rpm we found on ftp.suse.com installs a module into /lib/modules/2.2.14 which couldn't be load with 2.2.16, so an update for freeswan should be neccesary. Where can we find that?
Normally all modules of the system should be in the kernel rpm. If this is not the case, it is a bug on our side. I will have a look.
Thank you. AFAIK is the ipsec.o part of freeswan.rpm not k_*.rpm. Is the kernel source rpm patched with freeswan? I cannot remember that I saw a config option, but I haven't checked it to go for sure.
Third, we had trouble updateing the kernel itself. We updated the RPM (rpm -U k_deflt.rpm). After a problem with initrd I executed /sbin/mk_initrd. At boot, kernel said "uncompressing initrd" and showed that dots, but don't stopped drwaing dots (we rebooted a backup kernel after two screens of uncompressing dots).
You ran "mk_initrd" but failed to run "lilo" afterwards. mk_initrd created a new initrd, but lilo didn't know about it and did load junk.
Well, but I cannot imagine how this happend. I tried it two times (of course I run lilo after that). Then I reinstalled rpm and tried a third time, now with success...
"and of course lilo" is the magic thing you forgot in your first attempt.
That's impossible, since I renamed a backup image; lilo showed the new name. I usually run "lilo -v" and look for errors. Well, don't worry, now it works. I have some 6.1 machines running. If I copy the mk_initrd script, and modify /etc/lilo.conf, is it so easily possible to use initrd in such older distributions? Or are there other depencies? This seems better if SuSE would/will drop support for kernel-build-in SCSI controllers, which should be possible, as long as they are in the initrd. Or are the SCSI drivers still direct in the kernel? At least I think it's not enough to install the 2.2.16 kernel RPM on a suse-6.1 and run lilo, is it? Another point: nkitb-2000-?????.rpm requires a libauth.so.1 at freshen (rpm -F / rpm -U). It seems to be a new depency... It seems that I have to install another RPM before updating, could you tell me what package please?
