hi, how could I see from my logs if ftp connection was successful or not:
in.ftpd[8546]: connect from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
this line appears in logs regardless whether connection was established or not
try ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l in your inetd.conf the -l flag indicates logging

If he sees the connection attempts, in all probability he already has the -l option. What you can do is try in.ftpd -ll, which indicates the most verbous logging level: man ftpd gives -l Each successful and failed ftp(1) session is logged using syslog with a facility of LOG_FTP. If this option is specified twice, the retrieve (get), store (put), append, delete, make directory, remove directory and rename operations and their filename argu ments are also logged. This would log (un)successful attempts, as well as the username. Be careful though, your logs can get VERY big if you have a lot of connections (file operations are logged as well. cheers Stefan
