Both should work, so you can choose (between radeon==xf86-video-ati and KMS). In both cases you have to use code from git.
radeon is much easier and faster to checkout & compile.
I'm using the following xorg-video-ati driver version: 1:6.12.99+git20100213.221ef11b-0ubuntu0sarvatt built on 13th February, from here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=lucid and when gdm wants to start up, I get the following error: (**) "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad": Device: "/dev/input/mouse1" (EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"" (II) config/udev: Adding input device "Macintosh mouse button emulation" (/dev/input/event3) (**) "Macintosh mouse button emulation": Device: "/dev/input/mouse0" (EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""Macintosh mouse button emulation"" and thus gdm crashes, though startx works out fine. I also get the following: (II) RADEON(0): RADEONInitMemoryMap() : (II) RADEON(0): mem_size : 0x10000000 (II) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION : 0x00cf00c0 (II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0x003f0000 (II) RADEON(0): Depth moves disabled by default (II) RADEON(0): Memory manager initialized to (0,0) (2048,8191) (II) RADEON(0): Reserved area from (0,1920) to (2048,1922) (II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 2048 x 6269 (II) RADEON(0): RADEONRestoreMemMapRegisters() : (II) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION : 0x00cf00c0 0x003f0000 (II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0x003f0000 (==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled (EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled am I doing anything wrong? (or should I post these on a different mailing list?) I can of course compile a more recent version from git..
