[opensuse-project] I propose a packagers meeting
I think it would be useful to gather all packagers together and have a meeting. I think this would help maximize our efforts and help out new comers to opensuse packaging. Maybe once a week on Wednesday. With community/contrib repos and being able to contribute to openSUSE factory, more organization among the packagers in the community could help develop a great set of repositories and help share the work load that the current packages have. Last night made me think about this. I packaged up the new gimp 2.6 for factory and submitted it (which took some time to get everything together). It was rejected because someone else already had done it. If I had known that someone else was working on it, I could have put all of that effort into another package. I think that's a great idea. I also observed when several people worked together trying to package a component for mouseTrap, only to discover that after all their work, they realized someone else already did that component. There needs to be a better awareness thus reducing duplication of efforts. -- Bryen Yunashko Proud 2008 Candidate for openSUSE Board -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

But in both cases a mail to opensuse-packaging "Is anyone working on XYZ" would have worked as well, right? I'm not saying a regular packagers meeting is a bad idea, but I think to avoid duplicate packaging work, there are better means of coordination that having to wait six days till the next meeting ;). Agreed, I don't think it would be useful for that purpose. While it might be a good idea, although I'm not sure what we'd talk about :), we'd rather need some proper web application for - - managing a wishlist - - have packagers take items from the wishlist (and no, not the wiki) cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser <pascal.bleser@opensuse.org> /\\ http://opensuse.org -- I took the green pill _\_v FOSDEM::23+24 Feb 2008, Brussels, http://fosdem.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFI6nopr3NMWliFcXcRAlA3AKCqN5n3RxPkrzk4W3+aV9mRR5QxCgCggeaP MEp/Wph3HVSGeF9U/iZgiyk= =BgiM -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

You are right, the wiki is a pain for this For that purpose something like debian is using could be useful http://packages.qa.debian.org/common/index.html At lot of this functionality is maybe already in OBS or could be added to OBS. If we would like to make more people contribute to contrib something like that could be helpful. IMHO it would be even easier to just discuss a bit about the model (think "database tables and fields", if you prefer), a few features, and whip it up with Grails -- scaffolding should be sufficient given it would be very simplistic.. Grails generates the model, the CRUD controllers and views and... add a plugin for authentication, that's it. A simple CRUD web application with authentication for 2 or 3 tables is done in a few hours. And off the top of my head, a single table would even be enough, with metadata about the package requests (website, description, license), a status field (request, taken, done), and that's pretty much about it. OK, add a "packagers" table with contact information about the packagers who may pick requests from the queue. That's.. dunno.. an evening or two. The pain, as usual, would be to authenticate against iChain, as it isn't open, can only be done from something hosted at Novell, etc... > If we would like to make more people contribute to contrib something > like that could be helpful. Absolutely. We need better, more specific tooling, and for that we need more software developers. And we need to get rid of iChain or have an alternative gateway to it (e.g. OpenID or whatever). cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser <pascal.bleser@opensuse.org> /\\ http://opensuse.org -- I took the green pill _\_v FOSDEM::23+24 Feb 2008, Brussels, http://fosdem.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFI647Tr3NMWliFcXcRAsHiAJ4tZkWACHIBaARw3gELUKzy1I0MTQCbBzrM KcmUlq7IFQ37EZ/pL1CQxbM= =clM3 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Here's something I did for the GNOME Team: http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/OscGnome It's a system built on top of the OBS and some dirty web pages (like http://tmp.vuntz.net/opensuse-packages/obs.py) to know what's the current status of packages maintained by the team, and to work all together more effectively -- there's a small reservation system, eg. Also, the osc plugin makes life much easier. I don't have time to elaborate on this right now (I'm at hackfest), but this is something I've been willing to generalize to the complete distribution if possible. Which means pushing some features to osc/obs later on. I'll send a mail to opensuse-buildservice about all this when I'll be back home, but you should still feel free to send questions ;-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I suggest to discuss these needs, and the proposal on the opensuse-buildservice list and make it part of the new obs web client. (I'm Cc'ing that list)

a general "lock" feature would be a useful addition for packages to avoid that people duplicate the work. oh wait, we already had that feature :) Greetings, Dirk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

These are some good points. Maybe this is something we could discuss in a meeting, even if a 1 time only meeting :) With openSUSE becoming more a community distribution it might be good to have a regular packaging channel? Thanks, Stephen Shaw Proud 2008 openSUSE Board Candidate
