[opensuse-project] Board meeting minutes 2018-09-04
Hello, here are the board meeting minutes of Sep 4 2018. You can also read them on https://en.opensuse.org/Archive:Board_meeting_2018-09-04 All board members were present. = transparency discussion on opensuse-project@ = We voted and the result was not to discuss it in this board meeting, and to continue the discussion on the public mailinglist. If needed, we might discuss it in the next board meeting. = DevFest'18- VIT Vellore sponsoring = ACTION : Gertjan will pass the available info on to Doug = sponsorship process = The workflow of asking for sponsorship and who decides is not always clear. Also, sometimes sponsorship requests get sent to board@ (which should not be the first point of contact) The rule of thumb is: * for "usual" sponsorship, typically the openSUSE Marketing team decides * for "unusual" or unclear sponsorship requests, it gets escalated to the board ACTION :Gertjan will send an email to Douglas to ask him to update the wiki to make it clear how to request sponsorship. = Code of Conduct = Ana noticed that the Code of Conduct is outdated but instead of discussing it in the meeting she wrote to opensuse-project@ (as an individual, because it's not the board's job to do these changes). = next board election = We'll ask for volunteers for the election commitee soon so that they have time to decide if the next election should happen at the documented date (in December) or two years after the (delayed) 2017 election. ACTION: Simon writes in opensuse-project@ to ask for volunteers when he considers appropriate = rsync.opensuse.org = The rsync.o.o server hardware died after 12 years, and will be replaced ASAP. ACTION: Christian (wearing his Heroes hat) will ask the Heroes to take an inventory of our hardware (including a list of to-be-replaced hardware) to reduce the risk of similar hardware failures in the future. Regards, Christian Boltz --

There is a long delayed task here for a new Hero. rsync have some buckets of different sizes (40G, 60G, 80G, 160G ...), so to maximize the value of the RPMs that we store in those buckets we developed some years ago this [1]. There is a package too [2] The problem is that due to some planned movement in the servers, this code needs a bit of update, and a correct deployment in the new rsync server (or outside of it, as the knapsack algorith will take some CPU resources). I am willing to help with the code change, but I do not have the bandwidth to deal with the servers configuration. So if anyone step in to work on this and drive the comeback of the server, I can help with the code adjustment. Yes, that would really be an irony, but I think you misunderstood something ;-) We decided not to discuss about it in the last board meeting, and instead to keep the discussion public on the opensuse-project mailinglist. So basically we decided to keep everything fully transparent, instead of talking about it behind closed doors. We did _not_ decide about the actual question of making individual votes public yet - that would have been too early because at the time of the meeting, the discussion on this ML was still ongoing. Since that discussion has mostly finished now, and we have seen enough arguments from both sides, IMHO it's likely that we'll discuss the actual question in the next meeting. You've seen the opinion of all board members in the public discussion, therefore I can easily say (even without disclosing anything) that this discussion won't be boring ;-)
Was there any dissent to the decision or was it unanimous?
Initially there were different opinions (obviously, otherwise we probably wouldn't even have talked about it), but after a short discussion IIRC [1] everybody was convinced that we should keep the discussion on the public mailinglist. Yeah, I realize that "discussing if we want to discuss" sounds confusing, and hope this mail clarifies it. Regards, Christian Boltz [1] The board meeting was the evening after a 4 days wine festival, therefore I won't claim that I was fully awake ;-) -- Whoa whoa whoa that's WAY too efficient. I think you remember it wrong, because this is not true. We did vote to decide if we discuss about sharing voting results or not. The voting was needed because the decision was not unanimous. Sounds like I was more tired in that meeting than I thought, but since it was after a 4 days wine festival, I'm not too surprised ;-) Sorry for mis-remembering, and thanks for sending the correction!
