[opensuse-project] Questions for Board Applicants.
Dear all, Given the recent events, I decided to compile a small list of questions/topics to present to the contestants to the Board. 1. "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." - F. Nietzsche Given the discussion regarding the recent action of the current board in expelling a member, could you please comment the quotation above having in mind that action (and your knowledge about the situation)? 2. "Resentment seems to have been given us by nature for a defense, and for a defense only! It is the safeguard of justice and the security of innocence." - Adam Smith Whats your interpretation of the quote from Adam Smith. 3. Do you consider yourself a 'forgiving' oriented person? Please justify. In case you have restrictions to 'forgiving' could please identify them? Elaborate please. 4. "In general, the Internet was not designed to accommodate deliberate failures to communicate." - Daniel J. Bernstein Could you please give us your interpretation of the previous quotation ? 5. "All governments should be pressured to correct their abuses of human rights." - Richard M. Stallman Should only 'governaments' be pressured to correct abuses on Human Rights? What's your stand regarding Human Rights? Should an organization like openSUSE subscribe the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights? Should be Board be also the safekeeper and Guardion of such? (consider that the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights also contemplates the right to 'defense'). 7. "Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes." - Mahatma Gandhi Could you please comment the quotation above and relate it to your future position on the Board? Please elaborate. 6. If you take decisions on the Board on behalf of the community and the people that voted on you, do you believe that you should inform those people on controversial disputes about your standing? Where is the line between your own personal standing and the will of those who elected you? Thank you, Nelson. References: * F. Ok, I want to file my objection to these types of questions which posit the tight relation of over-arching philosophical concepts to the removal of one *member* [not "citizen", or "resident", or...] from an *Open Source project*. Have some perspective. You are talking about a volunteer organization with real-world resource limitations operated by *volunteers* with real-world limitations and other obligations. If you are really concerned about this issue wouldn't just proposing a specific policy regarding membership revocation and getting comments on that from candidates be far more constructive? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Ain't openSUSE an organization that also is based on philosophical concepts? For me it is important to know the applicants standings regarding such topics. We never know when we might run into the same issues on the future: "Those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - Alexandre Dumas

That is being done by the community in Parallel in another thread. Some applicants have already are involved on it, which is the case of Sankar at least, and in a very constructive wave. Nevertheless one is forcing them to answer, they are entitled not to answer, but of course their actions will be judged and evaluated by those who haven't casted votes yet. I also find strange that only 2 persons asked for questions so far. For sure my vote will be decided upon this, not that it matters.

The questions are irrelevant. You want them to answer questions based off of pseudo situations so you can pass judgement? I'm paying more attention to what level of dedication they have to the project, what do the participate in (Marketing/OBS/etc). I'm not going to base my votes off of "zomg they didn't answer this (stranger than fiction situation) i came up with to my standard. I'm not voting for them." -Matt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Some of us are hopefully basing our votes on what we know of the candidate and their history with the openSUSE project... are they someone we recognize? Are they someone who we can identify as a regular/long time contributor in some form or another (in any aspect from helping on the MLs, to packaging, to whatever)? Are they someone we think can do the job (and it's not an easy one) well enough to be trusted in the position? For me these aspects hold a lot more weight than vague philosophical questions. The questions themselves are interesting from a general discussion standpoint... maybe on the OT list.. but here? Agreed, this is a passive-aggressive attack on the existing board and an attempt to get all the other candidates to frame their candidacy relative to carefully selected quotes that represent your stance on the membership issue. And anyway, since you describe yourself as a friend of the ex-member in question, perhaps the proper course of action for you in this election would be to not run your own campaign as a single issue to reinstate your friend, or else what are you going to do for the following two years on the board? I'm very sorry, feel free to elaborate 'attack', you can reply in private.

None of the topics on the plaform say anything about 'reinstating' anyone, neither I never said the perpetrator was to be forgiven. But I am worried when 2 applicants have public statements fully supporting the Board's actions which remains untransparent, and the question I made were ignored since the very start... 1. Was the perpetrator given a proper chance to defend himself against the charges? If so when and how. 2. Why was the perpetrator booted from the IRC meeting where this was all solved? Peace...

1. Was the perpetrator given a proper chance to defend himself against the charges? If so when and how.
I guess you need to re-read or read more thoroughly the "public announcement", ie: <quote> After receiving a series of complaints from numerous members of the Community regarding violations of the Guiding Principles by that person over a prolonged period, the board began working to uphold its obligation to the membership by attempting to resolve the conflicts through discussions and mediation with all involved parties and ultimately issuing a warning of possible expulsion. In December, complaints were renewed and the Board felt that despite repeated warnings and discussions, the Board could no longer abide by actions that violated the principles which our Community is built upon. </quote> Doesn't a "prolonged period" fit or are specifics necessary?
2. Why was the perpetrator booted from the IRC meeting where this was all solved?
No answer, but probably that happened to be when the "expulsion" took place. I fail to see that this particular point has any revelance. Would it have been any better/worse to have continued conversation and increased the anamosity generated? Don't you think you are going a bit over the top with these questions? I mean it can be interesting to discuss quotes from famous people, but in this case I would appreciate an approach, which is a bit more down to earth. I for one are happy to vote for candidates, even if they don't feel like answering these questions. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
