[opensuse-project] A call to share your story on People of openSUSE
Hello ladies and gentlemen, Did you know that People of openSUSE is the second nicest place on the internet? You probably heard of it but the project was "almost" on hibernation since the 2012 era. Anyway, a week or so earlier I approached lcp and he shared his story (link below) and I'm here to encourage more people to share theirs as well. I believe it's really important for the healthiness of the community, getting to know each other more will results in more collaboration and at the same time help solving misunderstandings smoothly knowing where each side is coming from. Kinda similar to board candidates interviews but more friendly and for different cause. Still hesitated? here's what lcp has to say about it: "You should never agree to it, but if you do, do it once and never again." See? I mean if that didn't convince you, nothing will. Don't let it intimidate you, you can write something similar to "about me" while waiting for a bus and send it to me, it's no big deal but will make a difference. Always open for suggestions, Imad * lcp's story: https://news.opensuse.org/2019/06/07/people-of-opensuse-stasiek-michalski/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, First of all: nice link, thanks. I suppose that somebody needs to motivate people to write such great stories about themselves. It is a kind of psychological thing. I think some of the community people can be too shy or feeling that they are not important enough to be mentioned in the newspapers. So I think that just a call may be not enough, you need to hunt people personally, and ask to write stories privately. 11.06.2019 20:15, Imad Aldoj пишет:

Thanks for the support Well, believe me, I did. Even though I prefer to NOT be the one picking people and pushing them to share their own stories, I contacted few and was really looking to hear back from them (at least) but the truth is so far none of them even responded with a simple "no" and it hurts. You are a fairly new name here, maybe they just ignored your mail based on not knowing who you are ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.7°C) http://www.cloudsuisse.com/ - your owncloud, hosted in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

I am sorry to hear that. I am looking forward to your project to help "People of openSUSE" to come out of hibernation. I think you are right when you say that this is important for a community to get to know each other more and that this will result in more collaboration and help solving misunderstandings. In Open Source Communities you have to be patient and it takes time to complete a project you're personally attached to. Actually I did not ignore your email, simply put a flag on it and did not had time to answer it so far. I think you should give people a template to help them start writing. It not easy to write about yourself and without a "guide", not necessarily very strict, it is even harder. I also feel that people don't want to step in willingly because they feel that their contributions or stories are not "good enough" to be published. Maybe a small guide with examples of what sort of things, even the small ones, they can share will help. Regards, -- 'When there is no more room at school, the dumb will walk the Earth.' Hi Sébastien, You mean ignoring this email? don't worry about that... the part about getting ignored was direct emails to specific people inviting them in person but I don't wanna bring that up again really, it was just a note that I did my best. I feel like a template won't do justice here really, what if there're 3 questions about your job and you've a boring job for example or don't like to share it, no interview for you? I also found from previous interviews that people answer the template as if it's a formal job interview, "My name is John Smith, I work at Something Inc and I like Linux." but that's not the goal of "interview" here. So I decided to stay away from the static set of questions and to write a story with some interaction instead. I mean you'll answer questions one way or another but there's no standard, this is not "members of the month." :) So the plan is anyone who wants to share a bit about himself would say I'm interested and I contact him (email or chat somewhere depends on preference) it'll then get reviewed by Doug (ddemaio) this review is real quick for editing quality. punctuation, stuff like that. If you don't feel comfortable though no problem I can send you a template and take your time (there's no deadline), the whole thing was just an attempt to improve the experience. if there's a better way to encourage people and convince them that this is really not a "test", I'm open and better yet you can consider joining the team yourself Thanks, On Mon, Jun 24, 2019 at 11:07 PM Sébastien 'sogal' Poher <sogal@opensuse.org> wrote:

Sure, I wasn't thinking about a strict template but more about a guide or a set of example questions that people might find fun answering. Not question about their job or a formal presentation, but questions related to their experience with computing, free software and openSUSE to give them a starting point. For example: - When was the first time you used openSUSE ? - What is your worst memory with a computer ? - Tea or coffee ? - Desktop environmnent of choice ? - Do you play music, if so of which kind and which instrument ? - What is the last "life saver" software you discover ? - In one sentence, why do you like openSUSE project ? and so on.
So the plan is anyone who wants to share a bit about himself would say I'm interested and I contact him (email or chat somewhere depends on preference) it'll then get reviewed by Doug (ddemaio) this review is real quick for editing quality. punctuation, stuff like that.

Interesting, will see how we can use a template and avoid making people feel it's an investigation
