[opensuse-project] Home Server...possible?
Browsing the net I found this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/featur... Would it be possible to build something similar with openSUSE? In particular, are there backup solutions that allow to backup other PC's automatically with a Windows client too, in a user-friendly manner? The media sharing doesn't seem a problem. Bacula can do this. (http://bacula.org/en/)

Bacula is good , but the GUI (bat) is not suitable for anything but professionals. Bacula is also a big system and not the easiest to set up. We use Bacula at work and has a support agreement with Bacula Systems, so I'm a bit aquainted with it. Another possibility is rsnapshot , http://rsnapshot.org/howto/ . For everyday usage it would require a GUI though.... Birger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

It would be nice to have. Taking technical level of people that might be interested in this, it should be very easy to install and maintain, with ready to go plans how to use it in different scenarios, something similar to home entertainment center manuals. Is there any place we can discuss this, exchange images etc? I guess that we have everything, the only problem is to create configuration, and for that we have to establish goals. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I think this is a great idea and nothing should stop you from coming up with a solution. I think this would be a great product to market. As for a place to further discuss this, you can easily create a new IRC channel or for the time being, set up a wiki page. If there is sustained interest (i.e., not "Oooh great idea" and then tomorrow we all forget about it again) then you may wish to request a mailing list. But show demonstrated commitment to it so that Henne isn't supporting a mailing list that ends up with no activity. Hehe, please NOT ANOTHER channel or ML. If we go on this way, we'll need a 40'' screen to keep track of all channels in IRC! :-) This thread and openFATE seem more than enough to me, at least now that we are discussing if it's feasible. For pictures, a link is more than enough too. Regards, A. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Hi Bryen, Thanks for the support. For the beginning anyone that wants to take time with openSUSE media server project can use this thread, or/and mail me directly. When we collect some ideas what functions such server should provide, we can list them on the wiki. The functions should be derived from hardware configurations that should be served. Anyone with more links with ideas? -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

For the media center stuff there is Elisa (fluendo), which is already packaged on Packman, but contains codecs that cannot be included by default if I'm not wrong. What bothers me is that the backup functionality has to be _easy_ to use, practically automated, and it has to work on mac and windows too ;-) Regards, A. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Any developers out there interested in working with an application/project on this? I'm no application developer, but as I have said earlier in similar discussions, I will be very glad to help testing a solution like this!. Birger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I'm sorry but I do not agree. I think it only has to support Windows in the first instance. ( I am a Mac owner my self.... , but focus is needed) Birger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

We might use the link to the current wiki page where all the details on multimedia codecs are provided and so on, as alredy done in openSUSE. Regards, A. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

It would be better with a "1-click" install button or similar solution. Birger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

As UPnP/DLNA sw Coherence might be a good fit : http://coherence.beebits.net/wiki/WikiStart#Whatisit Squezzecenter/Slimserver is also a intersting SW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SlimServer What ever i s chosen, I think it's important to chose 1, one, SW per application area. This to be able to secure quality in the delivery and to have focus for the home user. Thanks for the links. There is a lot of reading :-) ... and research. I'm right now on Squezzecenter/Slimserver (web page is better organized), then back to Coherence. It seems that PulseAudio is in the same category for audio files. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
