Sadly out-of-the-box, openSUSE 12.3 doesn't support any kind of video
at all, not even WebM.
I have opened a bug on it "Bug 802980 - WebM Video fails to play in
KDE desktop",
but as release draws near the chances of it being looked at appears slim.
Anyway, Red Hat's RHEL6 does WebM just fine, and it is super-important
for all Open-Source software to standardize on something, and WebM
video (VP8) is the best we have for now.

You raise an interesting question and I thinkg, you are right here, as
long as we talk about royal-free, non-patent encumbered codecs (which
is fine with Ogg/Webm/WebP).
Now, I know that GStreamer based players should not have issues with
these files formats (it might be that we miss a package on the live
disks, but I'm sure they are in the repositories).
Which Video Player did you use for testing? Do you know if that one
uses GStreamer in the background?
Would you have the option of testing the same on a GNOME install with
Totem as videoplayer?

Huh? SLED10 supported MP3 IIRC. I don't think this means that it is
royalty free :-)

Hi Stephan,
Nope. KDE uses gstreamer as its backend for Phonon. The Xine backend is not
even in the KDE repositories anymore. Definitely 12.3 is supporting Webm
protocols, but it could be that the livecd is missing a particular gstreamer
package that is required for the support of Webm.
