[opensuse-project] Creating opensuse-performance list
Hi, I'd like for a new topic mailing list, "opensuse-performance", to be created. We'll use it to coordinate our work towards making openSUSE boot faster. See http://en.opensuse.org/Boottime/Boot_time for more info. -- Hans Petter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

We had opensuse-optimize list - which was closed due to lack of traffic: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-optimize/2007-11/msg00000.html Do we need a new list for every few new posts? I dont think so no. HPJ: Why cant we discuss these issues on opensuse-fatory? :) Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. Because most discussions ends up being something completely different from the topic. There are countless things to be done to make openSUSE boot faster, perform better etc, so why not have a separate ML for it? Just because there was no interest in the past doesn't mean that it wont happen this time around. The policy when it comes to IRC is "better to create too many, than too few" so why not the same with ML's? On opensuse-factory? Sorry this is not true.

Because we already have a list that fits perfectly. Dead lists are a very ugly thing to have and to get rid of. We already have way too many of those. Experience (I'm doing this since 7+ years) shows that lists for a specific task tend to go dead as soon as its done or people change.
Just because there was no interest in the past doesn't mean that it wont happen this time around.
Oh there was interest in opensuse-optimize. Very much so. It was THE hip project in the beginning of opensuse. It went dead after people integrated their ideas into the distribution. So did the list.
The policy when it comes to IRC is "better to create too many, than too few" so why not the same with ML's?
This is certainly not, and never was, my policy :) Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Because some of the people who're participating are only interested in this, and are already overloaded with e-mail. opensuse-factory is a high-traffic list. We need a low-traffic one. In general I don't think being high-traffic is a good requirement for keeping mailing lists alive. You end up selecting for flamewar lists that way. We need more quiet spaces to work on specialties, even otherwise silent lists where you can join and just start up a discussion with a specific audience (even if there's not a single post in months, the subscriber list remains an asset). Of course, we don't want to fragment the channels too much, but I think "performance" is a very broad topic that merits its own list. -- Hans Petter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
