Re: [opensuse-project] Meet the openSUSE Board Candidates
Bryen M Yunashko 11/28/12 6:34 PM >> To further clarify, the rule is for 40% of ANY company. So, SUSE technically shouldn't be singled out here. If say, for example, we have three candidates who are employed by the ABC Company, then only two of them could be on the Board if all three won an election.
And that 40% is ONLY for elected members of the Board. The chairman of the board is not beholden to that rule. He or she is appointed by SUSE. So you could have two (40%) elected board members PLUS 1 appointed board member from SUSE. So, it would be meaningless to set up a voting procedure where you vote for one employee and one non-employee because theoretically everybody is employed somewhere. As a voter, you may vote for as many candidates from the same company as you wish (up to the number of votes you are allowed.) What matters is the overall count of votes from the entire electorate.
Hope that helps, Bryen M Yunashko
As we're discussing this, I realise that the current Election page doesn't mention anyone's employer besides Roberts Should us candidates go ahead and list our employers on this page to properly reflect the policy, rather than just highlighting the SUSE candidates? (which I think we've got wrong on the current list anyhow, isn't Matt also working for SUSE?) It may not matter. Community members presumably will vote for the candidates they think are best suited to be on the board. Each voter has to determine for themselves whether place of employment plays a role in their own choice of whom to vote for. In the end, the 40% policy will get enforced when the votes are tallied. It would be great if we could keep the 40% policy out of voter's minds when they cast the ballot, meaning the 40% clause should not be a factor when casting the vote. That's a very good conclusion, Robert. Forget the 40% rule. But, voters may wish to consider a candidate's employment as part of the overall picture of what that candidate brings to the table. Therefore, to specifically answer Richard's question, if you feel that your work background is relevant to your platform, then do include it in your platform. We, the Election Officials team, will worry about the 40% when the time comes on December 17th. :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Agreed. In the previous election, somebody wrote the name of my employer on the wiki somewhere without my approval, if I remember correctly. It's not that I'm ashamed of working for that company, but as it doesn't support nor have anything to do with my involvement in openSUSE, FOSDEM, or FOSS in general, it doesn't get to have that tiny little bit of publicity either. (Which is also why I barely ever mention it anywhere.) Just to say that I believe there shouldn't be any requirement to disclose whom you work for, except to the election committee, for obvious reasons, but they don't need to make it public at any point either, as long as the 40% rule is enforced. cheers -- -o) Pascal Bleser /\\ http://opensuse.org -- we haz green _\_v http://fosdem.org -- we haz conf

Another thing I would like to know are the platforms of the candidates, I see Chucks and Roberts(they gave it here in previous mails) but I don't know were I can find the rest platforms. Also will there be any interviews of those guys? If you look at the original post of this thread, I linked to the main article on news.o.o. I'll do that again here. [1] In that article, it links to each email announcement of the candidates' standing up for election. Not just Robert's and Chuck's. There is also a link to the board election page which is where everyone is submitting their platforms. Some have completed theirs, others haven't yet and are working on it. Regarding interviews, that is a "just do it" function. :-) If you (or others) are motivated to do it, just do it. Keep in mind there's 8 candidates, so a lot of work to be done in a short period of time. And if you post on news.o.o, be careful not to show bias, as that's official openSUSE infrastructure and a bias could appear to endorse one candidate over another. If you post interviews on your own blogs, well, you can be as biased as you wish. :-) Personally, I'm not a fan of interviews. They're too canned and prepared. In the olden days, we used to have a live debate/forum on IRC channel where people asked all candidates present some questions. I was about to ask my fellow members of the Election Officials to initiate a schedule of when this open debate can be happening. I'm more a fan of this methodd because it is more honest, open and insightful as no one has a chance to prepare their canned responses. Afterwward, we can post the results on relevant mediums for everyone to read. Thanks!
