The BIOS vendors likely will need to include it as it is a Windows 8 certification requirement.
So we will probably have some support like this.
This will be fun, as Fedora will be doing signed kernels et al, on how we do this with our quite open buildservice...
Not to mention people who build their own kernels or need customized kernels for hardware on their systems (such as I needed for my Dell laptop to support the touchpad properly).
Yes, very interesting point. There are plenty of such examples.
Quoting from Swapnil's blog post....
"For users performing local customization, they will have the ability to self-register their own trusted keys on their own systems at no cost."
Other clarifications on this discussion...
"The $99 goes to Verisign, not Microsoft - further edit: once paid you can sign as many binaries as you want"
So Microsoft is not getting the money like some people have grumbled rather loudly about here.
Please read this posting from Matthew Garret at RedHat.... http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/12368.html which adds a lot more in depth information surrounding the issue.

This is what Red Hat clarified about UEFI and the undesirable key http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/06/06/1232243/red-hat-clarifies-doubts- over-uefi-secure-boot-solution Check the link comments below too. Garret has been working on UEFI workarrounds several months with no satisfactory outcomes to implement an easy and low cost solution. Hence the decision to buy it the key and building an universal Linux bootloader able to boot any Linux. At least , it was one of the ideas with some drawbacks too. It's an uneasy solution and sure it's not the best. At least, it's the one for this first lauching.
