There is a reason for the thephone number. Google gmail uses it in case the password is lost or thought to be compromised: it sends an SMS to the phone. Also used when it thinks the account has been accessed from a suspicious computer. Sometimes it may block the account till you take action. It can send an email to the another email account, but if both are on google, you are dead (happened to some people). There was a hickup not long ago on Google, many accounts on Android and elsewhere received a request for the password. I know people that did not know the password, having "never used it", and lost access to their accounts (it is needed on Android phones for things such as the address book or updates, to name two things that are always used).
