Hi Geekos! (...) I think that it's important to note to Leap 42.1 users, that they must update their OS within 6 months, but that can be made easily.
Speaking of which - I think I missed info on how the update will be handled and can't find any on the wiki. I mean - will this be the usual switch the repos to new version and zypper dup, or maybe perhaps like a normal package update with zypper up, being more like a service pack or something?
no SUSE or openSUSE distribution supports 'Service Pack' upgrades using zypper up Both SLE 12 SP2 and openSUSE Leap 42.2 will support 'offline' upgrades, by booting to the SLE/Leap installation media and choosing 'Upgrade' Leap will also support the 'change repos and zypper dup' method, which is very similar to SLE's Service Pack 'zypper migration' method openSUSE does not have exact SLE-like 'zypper migration' support, on account of openSUSE not being coupled to the SUSE Customer Centre at scc.suse.com. We would need that, or a similar source of product metadata in order to be able to centrally orchestrate the availability of functionality like 'zypper migration'. To date, no one has supplied such a service or patches to zypper migration to make such a feature a possibility. It's also worth considering that I've received feedback that suggests that most openSUSE users would find it questionable to register their installations in order to get that functionality compared to the current 'change repos and dup' approach, but that would be a side effect of having such a mechanism, regardless of whether the registration was active (user choosing to register or not) or passive (all openSUSE systems polling the 'metadata server').
