As far as I am concerned I have always tried to be receptive to people unfamiliar with git, by accepting Markdown-formatted files and registering a PR for them.
It sounds like you have added one-two extra steps in the process - compared to the three-step wiki process of clicking edit, writing some text, and hitting save. IMHO, that is not conducive to more user-created content - which I believe is an important way of involving more people.
