Hi All, I've recently installed SuSE Linux for PPC (ver- sion 7.3) on my PPC 7200. On the distro I found a copy of the BootX Application aswell as the Extension. The Application works fine, but the Extension unfortunately does not. When restart the machine the BootX-dialog does appear, but when I select Linux the monitor goes black -- it actually seems to switch itself off. This is strange because booting up Linux through the BootX Application functions fine (vmlinux selected, root device: /dev/sdb8). Of course I've contacted SuSE Support but after having tried their best they wrote:
I'm sorry, I don't have a clue, what is happe- ning or why it isn't working, we never encoun- tered such a problem.
In the mean time I've tried installingn MacBugs, but it doesn't even get into that, the monitor just dies leaving me no other option than to restart the machine... Has any of you got any idea what might be going on here? Hello Alexander! One year ago, I had a PPC 7200 too and I tried to install SuSe Linux 7.0. I had the same problem, SuSe support just told me, there must be en error in the extension. Of course, they should know this problem... I suppose, there is no way... Peter, Berne, Switzerland Am Dienstag den, 2. Juli 2002, um 11:05, schrieb Alexander Schrieken:

He's trying to use the BootX Extension with SuSE 7.3 not with 7.0. My answer was related to the SuSE version 7.3. If you mean the problem you had with 7.3, your problem with that version was different from the one he is getting. He didn't get such error messages. The screen turns black immediately. Have you told the BootX Extension to use this devive as root device? Does it find the Kernel on your Mac Partition? Have you tried playing around with the Options BootX offers you? Yours, Christian -- Christian Schmidt schmidtc@chemie.uni-hamburg.de

Can you try an older version of the bootx extension? http://www.penguinppc.org/~benh/ It seems the bootloader can not start the kernel at all, you should at least see some debug output "Welcome to Linux <version>" and some numbers, before the penguin appears. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...

I was about to -- it was the 'last resort' advice of SuSE Support aswell. However, I thought it might be wise to report my problem to Benjamin Herrenschmidt first. After all he made BootX. His suggestion was to change the filetype of the BootX Extension from "scri" to "INIT". I used ResEdit to do this, and guess what: it worked! I am now able to boot into Linux through the Extension.

Nope, there was nothing. Just a totally black screen and a 'dead' computer... Anyway, thanks for your help. Regards, Alexander Schrieken Amsterdam alx@spidernet.nl the Netherlands
