This is strange because booting up Linux through the BootX Application functions fine (vmlinux selected, root device: /dev/sdb8).
Can you try an older version of the bootx extension? http://www.penguinppc.org/~benh/ It seems the bootloader can not start the kernel at all, you should at least see some debug output "Welcome to Linux <version>" and some numbers, before the penguin appears.
