[opensuse-ppc] OpenSuSE on PS3
Hi, I know this has been mentioned in the past a few times - Has anybody managed to get OpenSuSE 10.x on to a PS3 yet? - Is there somewhere a otheros.bld file specific for OpenSuSE? - I have trawled around and so far I have only seen success stories of Fedora, Yellow Dog, Gentoo and Ubunto where Fedora and YDL have a distro that actually supports the PS3 and the other two are more of a painful hack to get to work. I have also heard rumors of Debian working but not seen definite guides. - I would like to stay loyal to SuSE if I can but if that is not viable I may have to bite the bullet and go for Fedora. I literally just installed YLD, mostly to just see the process and what a specific PS3 distro has done. My intention is to run openSUSE on it, and I am currently downloading 10.3 Alpha2. (anything earlier basically has no chance unless you update the kernel 2.6.20), and I am not sure if compile options that are done with standard openSUSE ppc kernel will be any good either. One thing to note is that with the PS3 firmware 1.6, you no longer need the Sony Installer (the otheros.self), you still need the otheros.bld which supposedly is customised for your distro. http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html Geoff Levand from Sony is quite active in the kernel, and a google search will uncover all sort of intersting discussions about upcoming GUI loaders etc. He also has put up the "PS3 Linux Distributor's Starter Kit" which details how to PS3 enable your distro. http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ What would be great is to have an openSUSE 10.3 release that works and has been tested on PS3. I am not sure what priority if any that SUSE gives this, but it in the history of openSUSE.org, this is a perfect opportunity for a community driven sub-project. I will, and I call for all others to, send any updates here and also document progress on http://en.opensuse.org/PS3 Pflodo Peter Flodin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org
