[opensuse-ppc] v10.2 on Wallstreet II
Thanx to Olaf, I'm now able to post to this list again. Thumbs down to both Netscape Mail(actually now AIM) and Google Mail for defaulting to HTML emails...... Ok, I upgraded my Powerbook Wallstreet Series II from v10.0 to v10.2 recently. Of course, when I do any "upgrade", I completely re-install the system with a clean format of the root partition. Here's the specs: G3/266/1M 320MB RAM 40GB HDD 20x CD-ROM 14.1" LCD ATI Rage LT Pro w/ 4MB VRAM D-Link DWL-G630 Cardbus wireless G(Atheros Chipset) The wireless works fine. I had to compile the driver from source because they don't have a repository for PPC on the madwifi site, but it works fine. It was a little flakey keeping a connection, which I experienced on my Thinkpad 390X under v10.1, but it was much better after a reboot, same as the Thinkpad. I'm using KInternet and the traditional ifup/down instead of network manager. I may install network manager to see how it works since sometimes KInternet doesn't want to properly connect to different networks. System wise, everything seems fine, and it's a good update in most cases. I did not install Apparmour, ZMD, or OpenOffice. Updates were a little weird. YOU tried to install a lot of 64bit packages on it's first update. It wanted the CDs inserted. I skipped the packages, and after that it was fine. It hasn't asked for them again when I installed other software. I'll be submitting a bug report per Olaf's recommendation. My 3Com cardbus 10/100 card didn't work. It was detected and set up, but it would never get an ip address. I'm going to try testing it again before a do a bug report. It worked fine under v10.0. Finally, Suspend doesn't work. It worked in v10.0, but it doesn't now. It refuses to suspend when I select suspend from the menu. It starts to suspend, but then immediately resumes. If I close the lid or remove the charger, it WILL suspend, but when it resumes, I have no screen. I'm not sure if it's the back light or not. I can login to a console and reboot or halt the system, but the screen is dark until the system restarts. I'll try using a flashlight on the screen next time to see if it is displaying anything or if it's dark. The processor gets pretty hot and the fan doesn't come on. Actually, the only time I've ever noticed the fan running is when I plug in the powercord when the system is off. It runs for about 2 seconds then shuts off. I've never hard ir run under MacOS or Linux. The cpu regularly reports up to 77-81 degrees C from /proc/cpuinfo and the case gets really warm. On a different note, I was able to compile and install MPlayer, LAME, XviD, and x264. MPlayers works fine, but when I run MenCoder using x264 or XviD, it shows an illegal instruction. I'm thinking it's to do with the lack of altivec on this G3. Does anyone know of any switch I can use on gcc or make or on the ./configure scripts that will disable compiling it with altivec? Otherwise, v10.2 is much more stable and polished to v10.1. Of course, the lack of Old World support was due to the kernel, so I never ran v10.1 on my Macs other than a B&W G3 that has now died. To the openSUSE team, keep up the good work.
